Compost and compost/loam mixes, like many garden and landscape products, are ordered by the cubic yard. Our calculator will help you figure out how many cubic yards you need (but if you need help, feel free to give us a call at 413-386-4932). All you need to use the calculator is the length and width of the area where you want to apply the compost or compost/loam mix and the depth you want. Here are some guidelines for how deep straight compost should be:
- Perennial beds: 2+ inches for a mulch.
- Vegetable Gardens: depending upon soil test requirements add ½ to 1 inch.
- Very sandy and heavily depleted soils might require a little more.
- New lawns: ½ to 1 inch
- Existing Lawns: ¼ to ½ inch

PLEASE NOTE that you should never use 100% compost instead of soil for growing plants, trees, shrubs or grass. Our 25% compost/75% loam mix is recommemded for most growing needs. Straight compost should only be used as a soil amendment, light top dressing or mulch. Ideally a professional soil test (see The Importance Of Soil Tests) will be used as a reference to determine the quantity of compost needed. For raised beds three parts topsoil to one part compost is a good blend.
